There is an established and extensive federal permitting process led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that is well underway to fully evaluate this project. A draft USACE Environmental Impact Statement, a work product of this process will be published in January 2025. This process will continue to include public input and participation.
SPCT has a plan with modern environmental safeguards and best practices in place to manage the material that will need to be dredged.
The Sparrows Point Channel has been thoroughly studied and evaluated. An independent study found that 89 percent of dredged material from the North and South Channels of Sparrows Point Channel is considered suitable for onsite or offsite upland placement. This affirms that the Channel can be safely dredged, placed, and managed at a combination of onsite and offsite locations.
SPCT represents the last major phase of clean up and redevelopment of Sparrows Point and a generational opportunity for the Baltimore region and the State of Maryland - this means thousands of jobs and an influx of billions of dollars that will grow our local economy.
